20 Years or 3 advices

Quoted from FB

Axe

The axe cannot boast of the trees it has cut down.

It could do nothing but for the woodsman.

He made it, he sharpened it, and he used it.

The moment he throws it aside; it becomes only old iron.

O that I may never lose sight of this.

Soft Matter Seminar

Due to curiosity, I attended this seminar on Micro-nanoscale Interfacial Phenomena in Soft Matter and Complex Fluids by Prof Chia Fu Chou from Taiwan.

This particular talk is about cases of using micro-nanofluidic interfaces for particle transport and for molecular and cellular analysis:

  1. DNA/protein capture and pre-concentration using nanoscale molecular traps
  2. Enhanced transport and sensing kinetics using nanoslits
  3. Confinement induced entropic recoiling of single DNA molecules
  4. Perspectives of cell-cell interactions and cancer cell dynamics at micro-nanofluidic interfaces.
In layman terms, they were trying to use the hole where the size is in nanometer, to straighten DNA/protein which exits in a bundle of coils in nature. This will enable them to identify the characteristic of DNA effectively. They also discuss what are the possible things that may be applied by having holes in nano scales such as channels to acts as trap!!

In conclusion, I am glad I am in Civil Engineering!haha

Steve Job Commencement Speech

Not sure what went wrong, need to click on the post in order to watch the clips.

Steve Jobs sharing his story, too bad he seems like reading his speech.

He shared 3 stories, about his life.
1. Connecting the dots.
2. Love and Loss
3. Death!

I like the first 2 stories.

"Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward. You can only connect them looking backwards, so you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future."

"I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did."

"If you haven't found it yet, keep looking, and don't settle."

Exam

Exam (2009), another mind blowing movie, revolving around 8 candidates to earn their dream job. The tricky part is, it was not normal interview, they were given a blank paper, and yet, they are require to provide their answer after 80min. So, what question should they answer, since there were no question on the blank paper?
In real life, people will get confused with their initial purpose or their ultimate goal when they get to ‘involved’ into the game. Those who stay firm on their character, understand their limits will shine the most.

Synopsis
8 candidates for a top job for a mysterious company gather in a windowless room after having surpassed some previous levels. They are sat in front of a piece of paper which in one sides says "candidate 1", "candidate 2", et cetera. The invigilator (Colin Salmon) arrives, and gives out the rules for the test: inside the room, there'll be no other law that what the company's rules, and - as it's a very important company, it'll be able to do whatever it wants -, the candidates cannot try to communicate with the invigilator himself or with the guard, they cannot spoil the paper and they cannot leave the room for any reason. If they break any of the rules, they would be disqualified. The test would consist in answering only one very simple question. The invigilator asks the candidates whether they have any questions, he sets the clock at 80 minutes and leaves the room.

The Valley of Death

“The Blind Side”, starring by Sandra Bullock! The story of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All American football player and first round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman and her family. This movie was so good and inspirational. The above is a poem which mentioned in the movie, “The Charge of the light bridge”. Why 600 rode in to the valley of death even though they know what is ahead of them.
Courage is a hard thing to figure,
You can have courage based on a dumb idea or mistake….
That’s why courage is tricky,
Should you always do what others tell you to do?
Sometimes you might not even know why you’re doing something.
Any fool can have courage,
But honor, that’s the real reason you either do something or you don’t.
It’s who you are and maybe who you want to be.
If you die trying for something important then you has both honor and courage
We should hope for courage and try for honor.
