LANG501 is a English language course for PG students at HKUST. I would say it a compact version of UG presentation experiences.
Today, Linda Mak (our instructor) shared 2 interesting videos.
Presenting like Steve Jobs!
Apple CEO Steve Jobs is well known for his electrifying presentations. Communications coach Carmine Gallo analyses the various techniques Steve used in launching the Mac Book in 2008.
Below is the summary for the video clip.
1. Open with a headline to set the theme of presentation/the direction of a meeting, and give the audience a reason to listen.
Make it clear and consistent, eg "Something is in the air" (The new Mac book being launched is called "Air").
2. Provide an outline.
Steve used sign post such as "There are 4 things that I'd like to take to you today"
3. Open and close each section with a clear transition.
4. Demonstrate with enthusiasm and WOW your audience.
Steve used words like, extraordinary, unbelievable, cool, amazing, awesome, incredible!!etc.
5. Sell an experience and make numbers meaningful.
Analogies help to connect the dots to your audience. eg " 4 million iPhone sold to date...The most popular phone on earth"
6. Make it visual.
Use 1 to 2 images per slide. Paint picture that doesn't overwhelm.Short on bullet point but big on visual!
7. Give them a show.
Identify your memorable and build up to it. eg. Steve pulled out the Mac our of an envelope.
8. Rehearse, rehearse and rehearse.
Fundamentals to the Pro, and of course applied on Amateur as well.hehe
9. Give the audience an added bonus to walk away with.
Steve end it by introducing a new product. Or end it by video or an quote or humorous will be nice.
